Moscow open to talks, but not at any price
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Moscow remains ready to discuss and analyze any initiatives presented by the American side. He added that Russia would not accept solutions that, in its view, required political concessions (Tak zareagował Ławrow na wieści o przylocie amerykańskiego negocjatora do Petersburga – RMF24).
Lavrov pointed to a change in U.S. foreign policy after the transition from Joe Biden's administration, noting that a new president is not bound by decisions of the previous one.
He said Russian authorities would listen with interest to proposals brought by Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who did not attend Tuesday's negotiations with Ukraine in Oslo, citing reported health problems. Lavrov said that if the proposals brought economic and financial benefits to Russia, there was no reason to reject them, but any such deal should not involve political concessions from Moscow.
Hubbard release on the agenda
U.S. President Donald Trump said he had discussed the case of Stephen Hubbard with Vladimir Putin at length and asked for his release, adding that the outcome remained open (Trump o prośbie skierowanej do Putina. "Zobaczymy, co się wydarzy” – RMF24). Trump said he wanted Hubbard brought home.
Hubbard was detained in 2022. Russia accused him of fighting for Ukraine as a mercenary, and in 2024 he was sentenced to nearly seven years in a penal colony. He is over 70 years old.
According to Reuters, Hubbard's release is expected to be one of the topics when Witkoff meets the Russian side in St. Petersburg on Wednesday. The New York Times reported that Witkoff is due to negotiate with the Russians that day.
