Incidents in Central Tirana
On October 24, security forces intervened against demonstrators in the Albanian capital, Tirana, after groups of students threw stones at officers and set fire to the entrance of the Ministry of Agriculture (В Албанії поліція застосувала сльозогінний газ і гумові кулі проти протестувальників – Suspilne). Police responded by using tear gas, water cannons, and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd (Gwałtowne starcia na Bałkanach. Ponad 300 rannych w 10 dni – Polsat News).
Albanian Radio Television reported that police initially used tear gas when a segment of the crowd moved toward the Council of Ministers building, while another group remained near the Ministry of Internal Affairs (В Албанії поліція застосувала сльозогінний газ та водомети проти демонстрантів – Європейська правда). Officers established a cordon around protesters approaching the government building and used water cannons and tear gas against them.
The demonstration near the Ministry of Education started peacefully but became violent when the building was pelted with stones, prompting a response from the police using water cannons.
Broader Unrest Situation
Authorities stated that more than 300 people have been injured in the unrest since mid-October. Local media indicated that the confrontations started around 14:30, and that students and supporters of the opposition Democratic Party were present among the crowd.
The demonstrations have continued for 12 days. Protesters demand the resignation of Edi Rama, who has declined to step down and has attributed the violence to opposition groups.
Police Response and Aftermath
Following the clashes, protesters dispersed and moved to various other locations across the city.
