Christine Lagarde to step down as ECB president on 7 February 2027, nine months early
European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde will leave her post on 7 February 2027, nine months before her term was due to end. The early exit opens the race to choose her successor before the French presidential election.

In brief
- Christine Lagarde will leave the European Central Bank presidency on 7 February 2027.
- Her term was scheduled to end in October 2027, so the exit comes nine months early.
- The early departure starts the process of choosing her successor before the French presidential election.
Early departure announced
The ECB said Lagarde told the Governing Council and European Council President Antonio Costa that she will step down on 7 February 2027 (EZB-Chefin Lagarde tritt im Februar vorzeitig zurück – tagesschau.de) (Europäische Zentralbank: Lagarde geht vorzeitig im Februar - Poker um EZB-Spitze – ZEIT ONLINE). Her term, which began in 2019, would otherwise have ended at the close of October 2027 (Mitteilung - EZB-Präsidentin Lagarde gibt ihr Amt im Februar vorzeitig auf – Deutschlandfunk). The announcement came on Thursday, as the central bank met to set eurozone interest rates (Europe’s central bank chief Christine Lagarde to step down nine months early – The Guardian).
Succession process
Costa said the process to pick her successor would begin the same day, with the aim of letting the European Council, made up of eurozone states, decide in good time (Szefowa Europejskiego Banku Centralnego rezygnuje – RMF24). Heads of state and government of the 21 eurozone countries now need to settle the appointment earlier than planned. Lagarde's exit also allows outgoing French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to fill the post before the French election in spring.
Context and speculation
Lagarde has been seen as a possible candidate to lead the World Economic Forum, whose annual meeting is held in Davos, and a decision on that is expected early next week. She has also been mentioned as a possible contender in the French presidential race, though she has not confirmed any such plans. Reports of an early exit had circulated for months.
Backdrop
Lagarde has headed the ECB since November 2019, becoming the first woman in the role (European Central Bank (ECB) head Christine Lagarde to step down in February, before her term ends – DW). Costa credited her leadership through the Covid-19 pandemic, the war in Europe, energy crises and inflation shocks. The ECB's current task is to keep prices stable across the euro area, including by setting key interest rates. Several eurozone economies are stalling, and concerns about gains by Eurosceptic parties are rising ahead of elections. The ECB is expected to weigh France's worsening public finances at this week's meeting.
