Hołownia will not run in next parliamentary election, says he is stepping back from leading Polska 2050

Decision announced in interview

Szymon Hołownia said he will not run in the next parliamentary elections. He told the daily Rzeczpospolita that he had already informed the parliamentary club and the leadership of Polska 2050, as well as coalition partners, the prime minister and the president (Hołownia nie wystartuje w wyborach. He added that he will not lead the party into the vote either. The decision was made now, about a year before the election, so that party members know who will head the list ("Zmieniam rower, nie drogę". Hołownia said nothing changes for the moment: he remains deputy speaker of the Sejm and chairman of the party's parliamentary club ("Szlag mnie trafił". Asked whether he was giving up, he described it as changing vehicles rather than abandoning the route, saying he would keep supporting his party.

Reasons given

Hołownia said he no longer wished to lead the party after losing several elections, not only winning them. He described his role as that of a founder who builds something and hands it to others, rather than someone who wants a long career in the Sejm. He also linked his weaker results to joining the government coalition. After taking a side in the political arena, he argued, it became hard to convince voters he wanted to break the two-camp divide. Relations with Tusk and the Constitutional Tribunal

In the same interview Hołownia said he has no grudge against Prime Minister Donald Tusk over his style of governing, though he said Tusk pursues his own political interest (Szczere wyznanie Hołowni. Tak powiedział o Tusku – Wirtualna Polska). He acknowledged that he and Tusk do not agree on the Constitutional Tribunal dispute. Hołownia backed a reset of the Tribunal, including placing all its judges on retirement.

What comes next

Hołownia said he will continue to encourage cooperation among the parties and expressed readiness to support contacts between the prime minister and the president. The party has yet to name a new leader for the next election campaign.
