Poland opens offshore wind installation terminal in Gdańsk, first power due in 2027

Poland has opened a new offshore installation terminal in the port of Gdańsk, a base for building wind farms in the Baltic Sea. Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the first electricity from the Baltica 2 farm should flow in the first half of 2027.

In brief

  • Terminal T5, a new offshore wind installation terminal, was officially opened in Gdańsk on 30 October 2026.
  • The project cost 1.2 billion zloty, including 700 million zloty from the National Recovery Plan, and added more than 21 hectares to the port.
  • Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the first power from the Baltica 2 farm should flow in the first half of 2027.
  • Baltica 2 is expected to supply electricity to 2.5 million households.

A domestic base for Baltic wind farms

Poland's offshore wind projects have lacked a key link in the supply chain: their own base for installation work. Parts for domestic projects had to pass through ports in Germany and Denmark (Polska buduje własną potęgę energetyczną na Bałtyku – Rzeczpospolita). The Terminal T5 in Gdańsk's Baltic Hub, officially opened on 30 October 2026, is meant to close that gap (Otwarto nowy terminal instalacyjny offshore w Porcie Gdańsk – Ministerstwo Infrastruktury) (Terminal T5 gotowy. Z Gdańska wypłyną statki budujące morskie farmy wiatrowe – Urząd Marszałkowski Województwa Pomorskiego). It is the second installation terminal for offshore wind farms in Poland (Nowy kawałek Polski. Morskie farmy wiatrowe zyskają – Rzeczpospolita).

Cost, funding and land

The terminal cost 1.2 billion zloty, of which 700 million zloty came from the National Recovery Plan (KPO) (Prąd z Bałtyku coraz bliżej. Tusk wskazał termin – Money.pl). The project also received significant EU funding (Więcej Polski, więcej mocy. Terminal T5 oficjalnie oddany do użytku – Kancelaria Prezesa Rady Ministrów). It added more than 21 hectares of land to the port. Sources differ on the build time: one says the new land was created in two years, another says construction took three (Port dla gigantów. Jak Polska buduje zaplecze morskiej energetyki wiatrowej – Rzeczpospolita).

What the terminal will serve

The terminal will handle the largest offshore wind components used in Europe today. Tusk said the first power from Baltica 2 is due in the first half of 2027 (Morska farma wiatrowa Baltica 2 coraz bliżej. Wiadomo, kiedy popłynie prąd – Bankier.pl). PGE is among the investors planning to use the site.

Deputy Infrastructure Minister Arkadiusz Marchewka said the terminal should draw more Polish companies into offshore projects as subcontractors and gives Polish firms a larger role in the sector. The government also presented the project as evidence that Poland's domestic industry can take on more of the work.

Background

The Baltic Hub already ranks as Poland's largest container terminal.
