Tesla to wind down Cybertruck production in Texas from mid-2027, Musk says

Open questions about the model's future

Musk did not say whether the pickup would be built somewhere else or stopped altogether, and he gave no details on orders already placed. Chief Cybertruck engineer Wes Morrill said in a separate post that the vehicle had served as a platform for technology development and would live on through the Cybercab (The rise and fall of the controversial Cybertruck, from a shattered window to celeb spottings to protests – Business Insider). Musk also said vehicles already on the road would remain in use for a long time.

Sales well below expectations

The Cybertruck went on sale in late 2023 after repeated delays from an original 2021 target. Musk had said the truck drew more than 250,000 pre-orders at its 2019 unveiling, and later reservation figures were higher. Cox Automotive data cited by Business Insider put total deliveries at roughly 76,000 units over three years. Other reporting put 2025 U.S. sales at about 20,000 units. Analysts have pointed to the angular design, a starting price near $92,490 in the U.S., and recalls and quality complaints as reasons for weak demand.

Battery and EV trend

The Cybertruck carries a large battery of about 123 kilowatt-hours, roughly a quarter of its weight. Its planned end follows the cancellation of Ford's F-150 Lightning, another large electric pickup, late last year. Ford plans to launch a smaller, sub-$30,000 electric pickup next year.

Context

The announcement came during a difficult week for Musk. Reuters reported that political spending by him, close to half a billion dollars, produced limited results in the U.S. midterm elections, with most Republican candidates he backed losing (Teslas Cybertruck: Tesla plant Ende der Produktion des Cybertrucks – ZEIT ONLINE).
