In brief
- Iran's Revolutionary Guard says two oil tankers and a tug caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz after a mine strike on a route it considers unauthorized.
- The claims come only from the Guard and Iranian and Russian-language outlets repeating it; no independent confirmation is available.
- The Guard also claims it seized two US drones, another claim without Western confirmation.
What the Revolutionary Guard reported
The Guard's naval branch said two tankers trying to pass through the strait on what it called an unauthorized route were stopped in the strait's waters after tanker-related incidents. One vessel was in the eastern part of the strait, the other inside it, according to a statement that Reuters, Bankier.pl and Iranian outlets relayed. (Dwa tankowce stanęły w ogniu w cieśninie Ormuz. Statki wpłynęły na miny – Bankier.pl) (نیروی دریایی سپاه: ۲ نفتکش در تنگه هرمز بر اثر برخورد با مین دریایی آتش گرفتند – khabaronline.ir)
According to the Guard, a large crude carrier heading through an unapproved passage in the south of the strait struck a mine, took damage, caught fire and was halted. A second supertanker leaving that corridor in the east was stopped by a large fire. Tug also reported burning
The Guard said a tug that approached the second tanker to help fight the blaze also caught fire. Reuters, citing the same statement, reported the incidents as separate events, with the tug involved in the eastern one.
Earlier reports and a second incident
A report dated 4 November said four tankers had struck mines in the same area and that the Guard had also detained two other ships. That report has not been matched by independent sources in our material, and its count differs from the later statement. (Płoną tankowce w cieśninie Ormuz. The Guard also said its electronic warfare units took control of two US LUCAS drones and landed them undamaged. Iranian outlets carried this claim; no Western confirmation appears in our material.
What is not confirmed
The material contains no independent account of the casualties, the cargo, the flag states or owners of the vessels, or any statement from the shipping companies. The Guard's account is the only source for the mine strikes. Reports from Azerbaijani and Russian outlets repeat the Guard's version and add no new facts. (Ещё одно судно подорвалось на мине в Ормузском проливе – apa.az) (КСИР заявил о пожарах на двух танкерах в Ормузском проливе – tehnowar.ru)
The Guard framed the events as a warning that breaking what it called the law in the strait would bring the United States only larger financial losses and political defeats. That is a Guard statement, not an assessment from outside observers.
