In brief
- Abdul El-Sayed was projected to win the Michigan Senate race over Republican Mike Rogers, based on incomplete returns.
- The projected result would make El-Sayed the first Muslim to serve in the U.S. Senate.
- The campaign involved heavy outside spending and a late endorsement of Rogers by a former primary rival.
A close race ends in a Democratic hold
Democrat Abdul El-Sayed took the Michigan Senate seat from former Republican congressman Mike Rogers, according to the Associated Press, which made the call on incomplete returns ("Udało się". Triumf demokratów w Michigan, pierwszy taki senator w historii – Polsat News). The AP put the vote at roughly 52.1 percent for El-Sayed and 45.9 percent for Rogers (Wygrał wyścig w Michigan. Pierwszy muzułmanin w Senacie USA – Wirtualna Polska). El-Sayed addressed supporters in Detroit shortly after 1:30 a.m. to claim the win.
A historic first
The 42-year-old epidemiologist, son of Egyptian immigrants, will be the first Muslim to serve in the Senate (Pierwszy taki senator w USA. Historyczna chwila – Onet) (Historyczny zwrot w USA. Abdul El-Sayed pierwszym muzułmaninem w Senacie – RMF24). He previously led the public health system in Detroit (У ЗША ўпершыню абралі мусульманіна ў Сенат. Раней Трамп называў гэтага кандыдата «джыхадыстам» – Nasza Niwa). Telling the crowd that Michigan had done it, he called himself the state's senator-elect (Media: Abdul El-Sayed pierwszym muzułmaninem w Senacie USA – TVN24).
Campaign against outside money and rhetoric
El-Sayed ran on universal health care from the left wing of the party and criticized U.S. military aid to Israel and Israeli conduct in Gaza. Outside groups tied to the Republican Party and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee spent tens of millions of dollars against him. Former President Donald Trump repeatedly attacked him during the race and called him a jihadist, drawing criticism over Islamophobic rhetoric. Two days before the vote, former primary rival Haley Stevens backed Rogers, a move El-Sayed had to absorb in the final stretch.
Addressing the vice president
In his victory speech, El-Sayed turned to Vice President J.D. Vance, who will administer the oath of office in January, joking that Vance would have to swear him in under the Constitution. He also spoke to Trump directly, saying the president could simply call him senator once he takes office.
Broader significance
The result keeps Michigan in Democratic hands in a Senate contest that is part of the 2026 midterm cycle. Analysts see the win as an argument for progressive candidates who run on economic and health-care messages against big-money opposition.
