Refinery fire in Krasnodar Krai

Ukrainian drones attacked the Afipsky oil refinery in Krasnodar Krai in southwestern Russia during the night of November 5 to 6, according to Ukrainian outlets and Russian opposition media (Potężny cios w Rosję. A fire broke out on the site, and thick black smoke rose over the surrounding industrial zone, drifting toward the city of Krasnodar (Ukraińcy się nie zatrzymują, czarna seria Rosjan. Gęsty dym sunie do stolicy regionu – Interia Wydarzenia). Explosions were also reported in neighboring Adygea.

Local authorities said no one was injured. Shrapnel from a drone damaged windows in a residential building, according to Ukrainian monitoring channels on Telegram. The Afipsky plant was placed under EU sanctions in April over Russia's war against Ukraine.

A wider campaign against refineries

The Afipsky strike is part of a broader wave of attacks. Ukraine resumed strikes on Russian refineries at the end of October after a two-week pause (Ukraińcy posyłają kolejne drony nad Rosję. Znowu dosięgnęły celów – RMF24). In the days before, drones hit the Riazan refinery, operated by Rosneft, and a Wildberries logistics centre in the same region (Czerwone niebo nad Rosją. Ukraina zadała potężny cios – Polsat News). Governor Pavel Malkov confirmed the strike on the warehouse. The Riazan refinery has an annual capacity of roughly 17 to 18 million tonnes of crude.

Other plants hit in the same period include facilities in Saratov, Orel, Samara, Ufa, Kstovo, Yaroslavl and Riazan (Ukraina osiąga swój cel. Analysts cited by Ukrainian media estimate that since late October the strikes have knocked out about 10 percent of Russian refining capacity. Several plants have not resumed production, and repairs may not restore full capacity.
