In brief

  • Reports by the Financial Times and The New York Times, citing a US intelligence memo, say Chinese intelligence recruited Alice Huang, a Megaspeed executive, to gather information on Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.
  • The memo reportedly describes a romantic relationship, a claim Nvidia calls routine and China denies.
  • Alice Huang was reportedly under US surveillance for at least a year over possible diversion of Nvidia chips to China.
  • President Donald Trump was reportedly briefed about a year ago and did not act on it.

Alleged recruitment and role

Alice Huang was managing director of Singapore-based data centre operator Megaspeed until at least 2023 (Chinese Spy Who Targeted Jensen Huang Worked Directly for China’s Top Spy Agency: Report – Gizmodo).

What Beijing was reportedly after

According to reports, Huang was tasked with gathering details on Nvidia's most advanced hardware and with cultivating a close personal relationship with the chief executive (China reportedly recruited AI exec to spy on Jensen Huang – The Verge). Beijing allegedly hoped he would lobby for shipments of the company's top chips to China. Huang reportedly also had ties to senior figures at other AI hardware firms, including Gigabyte.

Surveillance and export concerns

US agencies monitored her for at least a year and reportedly saw communications between her and Jensen Huang (Секс, чіпи та розвідка: як Пекін використав бізнесвумен для впливу на гендиректора Nvidia – TSN) (China denies allegations of spy operation targeting Nvidia CEO – BBC News). Investigators also suspected her of helping route advanced Nvidia chips to China in ways that evaded export controls, which led to scrutiny of Megaspeed (Шпіёнскі скандал у Nvidia: кітайская разведка магла выкарыстаць рамантычную сувязь з кіраўніком кампаніі – Nasza Niwa).

Claims about a personal relationship

The Financial Times reported, citing people familiar with the matter, that the memo also described a romantic relationship between the two (Megaspeed exec was recruited to spy on Nvidia CEO, according to US intelligence memo – TechCrunch). Nvidia said Jensen Huang's contacts with Alice Huang were routine and that the company does not pass classified material to customers. Alice Huang and Jensen Huang are not related, according to the same reporting.

Political fallout

The New York Times reported that President Donald Trump was briefed on the matter about a year ago and did not act on it (Szpiegowski skandal wokół Nvidii. Amerykański wywiad ostrzega – Business Insider Polska). The report has drawn attention because of Trump's close alignment with Jensen Huang on AI policy.

Responses

Beijing rejected the allegations as groundless speculation and accused Washington of trying to smear China. Nvidia described its dealings with Megaspeed as routine and said it tracks deployments of its GPUs. Alice Huang did not respond to requests for comment.
