Musk mocks the outcome on X
Elon Musk reacted to the results of the November 4, 2026 midterm elections with irony. Shortly after the results came in, he wrote on X that his space lasers for interfering in elections apparently did not work this time
Record spending
It is the largest amount a single donor has spent on political campaigns in one election cycle in US history. Another outlet put his spending at about $445 million, while Nasza Niwa reported the figure as around $400 million in its headline.
Texas defeat
One of the largest recipients was Republican Ken Paxton, who ran in Texas. Musk gave his campaign $168 million, but Paxton lost to Democrat James Talarico. The result was historic for Democrats: their candidate won Texas for the first time in 38 years. Musk responded to that result by suggesting that data centers in space now look quite attractive.
Congressional results
Democrats gained a majority in both chambers of Congress. In the House of Representatives they won 227 seats, against the 218 needed for control. In the Senate they will hold 54 seats, while Republicans hold 42.
Trump's response
President Donald Trump accepted the results and said he was ready to work with Democrats. He also signaled that he would not back decisions he disagrees with, pointing to his presidential veto power.
