What burned

The fire started in the early hours of 26 October 2026 at a waste processing facility in Sobuczyn, Poczesna commune, a short distance from Częstochowa (Nocny pożar składowiska w Sobuczynie. The alarm reached the Częstochowa state fire service dispatch around 3 a.m..

Firefighters reported that mixed waste stacked on the site was burning and that the flames covered roughly 250 square metres. Ten fire units from the State Fire Service and volunteer fire brigades worked on the blaze. By around 7:20 a.m. crews had moved to mopping-up work.

Official warning

The commune authorities issued an urgent notice asking residents to remain in their homes and to close all windows and doors tightly, because of the smoke spreading over the area ("Zamknijcie wszystkie okna". Local outlets described the smoke as dense and toxic and advised people to avoid going outside.

Cause and history

Police are expected to establish the cause of the fire. Local media noted that the same site had also burned earlier in the year, in May. No injuries have been reported in the accounts available so far.
