Ossoff holds his seat

Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff has retained his Senate seat in Georgia, beating Republican challenger Mike Collins on election night (US-Senat: Demokrat Jon Ossoff als Senator für Georgia wiedergewählt – ZEIT ONLINE) (Jon Ossoff wins reelection in Georgia, easily defeating Republican Mike Collins – NPR). Earlier in the cycle, the contest had been seen as one of the marquee Senate showdowns of the midterm year, but the result was not close (Democratic Sen. A comfortable margin

NBC News described Ossoff's victory as a cruise to re-election, with the Democrat ahead for most of the night. NPR also reported that he easily defeated Collins. The Guardian's headline reflected the same outcome, with Ossoff winning the Senate race over the Republican nominee (Jon Ossoff wins Georgia Senate race over Republican Mike Collins – The Guardian).

Wider Democratic result

In Virginia, Democrat Mark Warner also secured a fourth term in the Senate, according to ZEIT ONLINE. Reporting from the German outlet placed the Georgia outcome within a broader set of midterm results that favored Democrats in the Senate (Midterms: Sender: Demokrat Ossoff verteidigt Senatssitz in Georgia – ZEIT ONLINE).

What comes next

Ossoff will serve another term in the Senate, keeping the Georgia seat in Democratic hands. The outcome leaves Collins, a Republican congressman, without the seat he had sought in the state.
