Ukrainian-born Republican who opposed Ukraine aid loses House race in Indiana

Republican Victoria Spartz, born in Ukraine and a critic of military aid to Kyiv, has lost her seat contest in Indiana's 5th district to Democrat J.D. Ford, according to counts covering most of the vote. The result adds to a broader Republican setback in the midterm elections.

Results in Indiana's 5th district

With about 99% of ballots counted in her district, Spartz trailed Democrat J.D. Ford by 51.66% to 48.34%, the Associated Press reported (Уродженка України Спартц поступилася демократу на виборах до Конгресу США – Українська правда) (Конгресвумен українського походження Спартц програла вибори до Конгресу – Європейська правда). Earlier projections from Decision Desk HQ, cited by The Hill, had already called the race for Ford (Член Конгресса США украинского происхождения Виктория Спартц, голосовавшая против помощи Украине, проиграла выборы в Конгресс – NV).

Her background and shift on Ukraine

Spartz was born in Nosivka, in Chernihiv region, in 1978 (Виступала проти допомоги Києву: українка Вікторія Спартц програла вибори до Конгресу США – Espreso) (Українка за походженням програла вибори до Палати представників США: хто її випередив – TSN). She moved to the United States in 2000, married a native of Indiana and obtained American citizenship. She worked in finance, taught at Indiana University and served as a state senator before winning a seat in Congress in 2020 as a supporter of Donald Trump.

Her position later changed. In April 2024 she voted against a package of military and financial aid to Ukraine worth about $61 billion, citing the need for stronger oversight of U.S. funds and greater attention to border security. Ukrainian outlets reported that she later joined efforts to block bills providing support to Kyiv, and that she had called Volodymyr Zelensky an "idiot" and urged Ukrainians to accept the loss of territory.

Wider midterm picture

Preliminary midterm results showed Republicans losing their majority in the Senate, with Democrats reaching the 51 seats needed for control. Democrats were also expected to take the House. Trump said Republicans would have won had he been on the ballot, a claim offered as an explanation for the party's losses.

The Indiana defeat is one of the individual races that will be closely watched as the final tallies are confirmed.
