In brief

  • Kazakhstan has temporarily stopped crude exports to Russia via the Atyrau–Samara pipeline after a drone attack on Samara region.
  • The Samara station, a key Transneft node, can store more than 1.6 million cubic meters of oil.
  • Kazakhstan shipped 7.57 million tonnes along the route in the first nine months of the year.
  • Neither Kyiv nor Moscow has officially confirmed damage to oil facilities.

Exports paused after overnight strike

Kazakhstan's Ministry of Energy has temporarily halted crude shipments to Russia along the Atyrau–Samara pipeline, following a drone attack on the Samara region in the night to Monday, November 2 (Казахстан зупиняв постачання нафти до Росії після атак безпілотників на трубопровід «Атирау — Самара» – Suspilne) (Казахстан остановил прокачку нефти в Россию после атаки дронов на Самарскую область — Bloomberg – NV). According to the ministry, which spoke to Bloomberg, parts of the pipeline infrastructure in the Samara region were hit, and supplies are expected to restart in the near future.

Samara station shows signs of fire

A NASA FIRMS satellite image taken on Monday recorded a fresh thermal anomaly at the Samara pumping station, a pattern that can point to a fire. Ukrainian media, citing the Telegram channel Astra, reported smoke rising over the Samara station near the settlement of Prosvet, where Ukrinform says one of Europe's largest tank farms is located (Drones attack Samara oil pumping station in Russia – media – Ukrinform).

Russian officials and unconfirmed claims

Samara regional governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev said the region had come under attack by Ukrainian drones. Neither Ukraine nor Russia has officially confirmed damage to oil facilities (Казахстан остановил прокачку нефти в Россию – Charter 97).

Role of the Samara station

The Samara station is one of the key nodes of the Russian pipeline network operated by Transneft.

Volume of Kazakh exports

The Atyrau–Samara route is one of Kazakhstan's main export channels for crude. Over the first nine months of this year, Kazakhstan shipped 7.57 million tonnes of oil along it.

What comes next

The Kazakh ministry has said flows will resume soon, but no date has been given. Whether the outage lasts will depend on the extent of the damage at the Samara station, which has not been officially assessed.
