In brief
- South Korean officials say Kim Jong Un entered China by train over the newly opened New Yalu River Bridge and reached Dandong.

- The visit falls near the anniversary of China's entry into the Korean War.
Unannounced trip over a new bridge
South Korean officials said Kim Jong Un travelled by train from Pyongyang to Sinuiju and then crossed the New Yalu River Bridge into Dandong, a city in Liaoning province on the Chinese border (Po vizito Kinijos pasienio mieste Kim Jong Unas sugrįžo į Šiaurės Korėją – 15min.lt) (Chiny. The trip was not announced in advance, and by Saturday evening neither North Korean nor Chinese authorities had confirmed it. Chinese media later reported that Kim had returned home after a single day in Dandong.
Reported meeting with Chinese premier
Yonhap, citing a government source in Seoul, reported that Chinese Premier Li Qiang also travelled to Dandong and that the two leaders met (Pietų Korėjos žiniasklaida: Kim Jong Unas atvyko į Kinijos pasienio miestą – LRT). The claim rests on anonymous sources and has no independent confirmation.
A bridge that sat unused for years
It officially opened about a week before Kim's reported crossing, a step toward closer economic ties (North Korean leader Kim Jong Un arrived in China's border city – DW). China remains North Korea's largest trading partner and its main source of diplomatic and economic support.
Timing near a historic anniversary
The visit falls close to the anniversary of China's entry into the Korean War on October 25, 1950, which Beijing marks on Sunday. It is not yet known whether Kim will attend commemorations or hold talks with Xi Jinping.
Context on Kim's travel
Kim rarely leaves North Korea. The trip would be his first known journey abroad in over a year. The bridge opened only weeks after North Korea and Russia held a similar ceremony for a crossing of their own.
