Brigade role and structure
One of Poland's territorial defence brigades is being converted into the Warmian-Masurian Border Defence Brigade. Its new tasks centre on protecting the frontier with the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. (Польща створює військову бригаду для оборони на кордоні з Росією – Українська правда) The brigade's commander, Colonel Cezary Kiszkowiak, told RMF FM that the unit will be responsible for defending the border zone rather than guarding it. It will not replace the Border Guard service. (Польша создает новую бригаду на границе с Россией – Charter 97)
Timeline
The reorganisation is scheduled to finish by the end of 2026. According to the Polish army, the soldiers assigned to the brigade are currently being re-equipped. Full combat readiness is expected within the following two years.
Context
The move comes as Lithuania extends its heightened guard on its border with Kaliningrad until mid-November. Russian President Vladimir Putin has reaffirmed earlier warnings, conveyed to NATO member states through Russian embassies, that a direct attack on Kaliningrad or another Russian region would bring the full range of Russian weapons into play. Moscow has in recent days also threatened NATO with the use of force if it tries to isolate the exclave.
Charter 97 links the announcement to Moscow's rhetoric and argues that Russia has stepped up sabotage in European countries in recent months. Those claims are the outlet's own assessment and are not confirmed by the Polish side.
Practical questions
The brigade is aimed at border defence rather than routine border control, so day-to-day checks and crossings remain the job of the Border Guard. Information on the unit's size and budget was not included in the reports.
