German startup Stark Defence to build 24-metre autonomous vessel to monitor Russia's shadow fleet

In brief

  • Berlin start-up Stark Defence plans to launch a 24-metre unmanned surface vessel next year.
  • The vessel would monitor Russia's shadow fleet and protect undersea cables in European waters.
  • The company says such systems could cost up to a thousand times less than conventional frigates.

Autonomous vessel aimed at shadow fleet

The German start-up Stark Defence plans to put a 24-metre unmanned surface vessel into the water next year (Німецький стартап розробляє інноваційне судно для відстеження російського "тіньового флоту" – Європейська правда). The craft is designed to watch over subsea power and data cables and to follow vessels linked to Russia's so-called shadow fleet in European waters (Немецкий стартап создаст морской дрон для слежки за теневым флотом России – Charter 97).

Cost and role at sea

According to the company, systems of this kind could cost up to a thousand times less than conventional frigates (Немецкая компания создаст беспилотный корабль для охоты на «теневой флот» России – Charter 97). Reports say the drone would also be used to guard underwater cables, a task that has drawn growing attention after damage to such infrastructure in the Baltic Sea.

Why it matters

Shadow fleet tankers, which often operate with opaque ownership and limited insurance, have become a focus for European governments concerned about sanctions evasion and the security of critical links on the seabed. A low-cost, persistent surveillance platform would give coastal states another tool that does not depend on crewed warships.

Timeline and open questions

The launch is currently planned for next year, and the sources do not describe a test schedule, a buyer or a confirmed budget for the programme.
