Tender for rebuilding a problematic junction

The Suwałki city hall has announced a tender for rebuilding the junction of Armii Krajowej, rtm. Witolda Pileckiego and gen. The city expects the project to solve traffic problems at the intersection once and for all.

Procurement model and scope

The investment will be carried out under a design-and-build model, meaning the contractor first prepares the documentation and obtains the required permits, and only then carries out the works (Przebudowa „ronda blacharzy” w Suwałkach. Jest przetarg – miastosuwalki.pl). The contract covers technical documentation and designs for permanent and temporary traffic management. The works will cover the section of gen. Pułaskiego Street from Wierusza Kowalskiego Street to property no. 105.

Key elements of the project

• construction of a pedestrian-cycle path, a bicycle lane and new sidewalks along gen. Pułaskiego Street;
• nine pedestrian crossings combined with cycle crossings, with lighting to improve visibility after dark;
• installation of intelligent traffic signals with video detection and traffic coordination;
• resurfacing of the roadway at the junction.

Background: a roundabout that did not solve the problem

A turbo roundabout was built at this junction in 2020, but according to the city it did not eliminate dangerous situations. Drivers, pedestrians and cyclists have reported traffic problems at the site for years. The current tender is meant to change traffic organization and improve safety for all road users.
