In brief
- Swedish police boarded a cargo ship of over 80 meters northwest of Gotland overnight, according to TV4 Nyheter.
- TV4 reports the crew are Russian citizens; police declined to confirm nationality.
- The ship's operator has an office in Kaliningrad and has been investigated over possible links to Russian hybrid operations.
- Sweden has detained several Russian-crewed vessels since late 2025, which Moscow criticises.
Night-time check off Gotland
Swedish police boarded a cargo vessel longer than 80 meters in the Baltic Sea, northwest of the island of Gotland, in the night to Saturday, 1 November, according to TV4 Nyheter The ship's name and operator are not published in the reports (Швеция провела спецоперацию на судне с экипажем РФ в Балтийском море – rbc.ua).
Crew and company links
TV4 reported that the crew are Russian citizens, while police refused to comment on nationality. The company that owns the ship has an office in Kaliningrad, where it recruits crews, the broadcaster said. Earlier investigations into the firm concerned possible links to Russian hybrid and intelligence operations, and its vessels were examined over drone alarms in several European countries.
What police said
Stockholm regional police spokeswoman Karina Skagerlind said officers had boarded the ship at night and checked crew members' travel documents. TV4 said a national police special unit took part, but police did not confirm this and said they used the resources they needed. Skagerlind also said nothing irregular had been found on board.
Context
The ship's operator and the Kaliningrad link fit a pattern of recent Swedish action. In March, Swedish coast guard seized the tanker Sea Owl I, whose captain and several crew were Russian; the captain was later released. Russia's ambassador to Sweden, Sergei Belyaev, has said Stockholm has detained five cargo ships since late 2025 with Russian crews and has not filed any real charges. Russian outlets describe the measures as politically motivated; this is their claim, and no Swedish source confirms it.
Confirmation status
The central claims, the boarding and the document check, rest on TV4 Nyheter and are repeated by Ukrainian outlet RBC-Ukraine. Russian state-linked media repeat the story, but Swedish police have not publicly confirmed the vessel's nationality or crew details beyond what is quoted above.
