Ceasefire to Open Route to Oleshky

Dmytro Lubinets, the Ukrainian human rights commissioner, stated that he reached an agreement with his Russian counterpart, Yana Lantratova, during an online discussion on October 24. The primary objective of the ceasefire is to permit engineers to clear the roads leading into the city. Stages of the Truce

After the road is cleared, aid convoys are scheduled to deliver essential supplies directly into the city, including food, water, medicines, and equipment for the local hospital (Лубінець детально розповів, як буде відбуватися гуманітарна місія в Олешках – UNIAN). Residents will then be given the choice to leave, either for Ukraine or for Russia. Lubinets said he will personally provide updates on every phase of the agreement. A new mechanism involving the United States will oversee compliance, and Lubinets said Washington would monitor it physically.

Diplomatic Efforts and Pressure

The push for the agreement was influenced by a hunger strike begun on October 20 by Pina Pieczerno, a vice-president of the European Parliament, to draw international attention to the crisis. Lubinets spoke with her on the evening of October 23 and urged her to end the fast, citing progress on aid and evacuation. The White House announced on October 23 that First Lady Melania Trump had helped secure the local truce, a role Lubinets acknowledged in the arrangement. In an address on October 24, President Volodymyr Zelensky said the parties had reached an understanding on the operation, while stressing that mining of roads by Russian forces remained the main obstacle.
