Google will let schools skip AI tools, but they have to give up search, too
Google will switch off its AI features for K-12 student accounts by default, and schools that decline them will lose Google Search as well. Administrators must manually enable the tools when the change rolls out in the coming months.

In brief
- Google will keep its AI tools, including Gemini and Search features, disabled by default for K-12 student accounts in schools using its education products.
- Administrators must manually turn the tools on once the changes roll out over the coming months.
- Schools that decline the AI tools would also lose access to Google Search, under an all-or-nothing policy.
Opt-out policy
Google plans to keep AI tools disabled by default in schools that use its education products, a move first reported by Gizmodo. Administrators would have to switch the tools on themselves once the changes arrive over the coming months (Google will let schools skip AI tools, but they have to give up search, too – Ars Technica). The company says the approach was shaped by consultations with educators, researchers and lawmakers.
What gets switched off
For K-12 student accounts, all four stay off unless an administrator actively enables them (Google is entirely disabling Search in schools that don’t want AI – The Verge). Schools cannot turn off the Gemini-powered features while keeping Search running.
Why Search is tied to AI
According to TechCrunch, Google Search now includes AI features, and the company treats schools that restrict AI as also losing access to Search. The link is a product decision by Google rather than a technical necessity of the search engine itself.
Scope and timing
Forbes reported that the restriction would take effect next year and affect millions of classrooms (Google Will Cut Off Search Engine Access To Schools Banning Generative AI – Forbes). The policy works on an all-or-nothing basis, leaving districts to choose between AI exposure for students and losing a widely used search tool.
