Wrocław tests ground for underground rail: boreholes at Dworzec Świebodzki begin
Dolnośląska Służba Dróg i Kolei has started test boreholes near Dworzec Świebodzki to check whether a tunnel for underground rail, possibly a metro-like line, is technically feasible. The results will guide the choice of technology and the depth of any future tunnel.

In brief
- Test boreholes 30 metres deep have started near Dworzec Świebodzki in Wrocław.
- The surveys will check ground strength, groundwater level and the best tunnelling depth.
- Authorities say the surface rail network is overloaded and a through tunnel could relieve it.
- The city hopes to reactivate the station by 2030; no metro decision has been made yet.
Test drilling begins at Dworzec Świebodzki
Drilling crews have started geological boreholes next to the disused Dworzec Świebodzki station in Wrocław, commissioned by the Lower Silesian Road and Rail Service. Engineers will drill to a depth of 30 metres at two locations. The data should show whether tunnels could be routed through the area at all (DSDiK sprawdzi, czy we Wrocławiu może powstać metro – radioszczecin.pl) („To już nie jest fantastyka”. Pierwszy krok Wrocławia w stronę „metra" - Wiadomości Radio ZET – radiozet.pl).
What the surveys will measure
The work is meant to test ground bearing capacity and the level of the groundwater table. Specialists also want to find the optimal depth at which a tunnel boring machine could operate in the future. The answer will determine which construction technology is suitable for the project (Tunel pod Odrą i metro we Wrocławiu? Władze robią pierwszy krok – RMF24) (Metro we Wrocławiu? Why local authorities want a tunnel
Regional and city officials argue that the existing surface network has reached its limit. The viaduct leading to Wrocław Główny is so heavily loaded that commuter trains have to queue before entering it. A new through-station tunnel would take over part of the regional traffic.
Skepticism and the city's timetable
The service's director, Mateusz Masłowski, said many people had long declared a metro or through tunnel impossible in Wrocław, and that the authority preferred to test that claim before accepting it. The city hopes to see the reactivation of Dworzec Świebodzki by 2030, which would require the geological findings to arrive quickly.
What comes next
The drilling results will be used to assess construction methods and their likely costs. No decision on building a metro has been made; the current step only establishes whether the ground conditions allow for an underground line.
