Reorganisation affects a fifth of the workforce
Canva's co-founder and chief executive, Melanie Perkins, announced on Tuesday that 1,271 people will be affected by a major reorganisation (Canva is announcing changes and layoffs affecting 22 percent of its staff – The Verge) (Canva CEO says a major reorganization will affect 22% of its workforce. Read the memo. – Business Insider). Some will see their roles changed or be asked to move to centralised hubs, while others will lose their jobs. Perkins described the decision as one of the hardest the company has faced and said it was made after months of planning for the next stage of the business.
Growth slows after a decade of expansion
The restructuring comes after the company lowered its expectations for growth. In August, Canva cut its 2026 revenue growth forecast from 30 percent to 20 percent. In her memo to staff, Perkins said this year had been the company's hardest yet and that growth had slowed for the first time in ten years.
Canva also faces stronger competition from artificial intelligence tools, including image-generating models from OpenAI and Google.
What changes for employees
Perkins said the company is simplifying its management ranks and shifting a growing share of positions to its Sydney office, with affected staff in other locations facing reassignment. Employees who lose their jobs will receive at least six months' pay. The company has not said how many of the 1,271 affected staff will be made redundant.
The Guardian reported that the company plans to cut or relocate more than 1,200 jobs (Canva layoffs: design giant to cut or relocate more than 1,200 jobs in major restructure – The Guardian). The figure is close to the 1,271 employees the company says are affected, though the two numbers are not identical and the Guardian did not explain the difference.
