White House vows to defend Trump's record
The White House published a statement on its website on November 4 accusing Democrats of trying to reverse everything Trump has accomplished over the remaining two years of his term («Трамп никогда не прекратит борьбу». Белый дом раскритиковал «фейковые новости и радикальных левых» после победы демократов на выборах – NV). The administration argued that such efforts would collapse, as earlier attempts by the left had (У Білому домі заявили, що Трамп "не припинить боротися" за свої "досягнення" після перемоги демократів – Espreso).
What the administration counts as achievements
Among the accomplishments it listed were border security, the end of diversity, equity and inclusion programs, energy independence and child protection (У Білому домі заявили, що демократам не вдасться "скасувати досягнення" Трампа – Українська правда) (Білий дім відповів демократам після виборів: що заявили про політику Трампа – TSN). The statement also cited deportations and what it called American energy dominance. It recalled that Trump had twice fought off impeachment attempts.
Midterm results
Democrats gained majorities in both chambers of Congress in the vote held on November 3. In the House they won 228 seats, above the 218 needed for control, while in the Senate they will hold 54 seats to the Republicans' 44. Reports differ on the exact Senate tally, with one outlet listing 46 for Republicans.
Trump's stated position
Trump accepted the results and said he was ready to work with Democrats, but warned he would not back decisions that conflict with his position, and pointed to his presidential veto. Earlier, he devoted extended remarks to defending a large ballroom he is building at the White House rather than to the Republican losses.
What comes next
The newly elected Congress is due to convene in January. Until then, the White House has signaled that it expects a fight over the administration's policies.
